My daughter and I took part in Mantic’s Halo Fast Grow Painting Challenge this month. At the time of writing, it isn’t quite finished yet (ends 1st November), but we’ve been on the ball (aided by a few storms outside), and I’m happy to report that we’re done.
As part of Mantic’s sponsorship of the Tabletop Miniature Hobby Podcast, they sent me a box of Banished Sangheili Mercenaries. You can listen to the Halo-focused episode with Ronnie and Alex of Mantic right here, or on your podcast app of choice.

My daughter (5) was given her own box of Banished Reinforcements. She’s always been fascinated with my painting and couldn’t wait to get started. We took a trip to the local hobby shop and bought her a brush and a couple of Army Painter speed paint markers, too.
The only thing I did for her was spray the primer. After that, the project was all hers.
She really took her time with it. I’m amazed at how much her attention span has increased, going from four to five.
Elsewhere, I got on with mine. I put some Vallejo ground texture on the bases before doing a zenithal prime and gave them a coat of Citadel Frostheart contrast paint.
My daughter liked the pens, but she seemed equally as happy using her brush. She opted for a ‘psychedelic’ scheme.
I drybrushed the lads with Vallejo Glacier Blue. I then applied another coat of Frostheart, this time almost using it like a wash.
Meanwhile, these guys were banished… to the doll’s house for a tea party!
And I finished up with more Citadel contrast paints, Basilicanum Grey for the bases and Black Templar for the… well, the black bits. I’m pretty chuffed with how they turned out.
A massive thanks to Mantic for the collaboration opportunity, which has helped pull me out of a painting lull. I have some momentum to tackle my pile of potential, and perhaps another pair of hands to help me keep going, too!
By the way, while you’re here… you can win some great Halo-related goodies by submitting a hobby update voice clip for the October-November episode of the podcast. Head to the voicemail page and tell us what you’re painting, playing, or planning for right now. One lucky winner will be drawn at random, and they’ll have the choice of:
- the new Covenant Box
- the v1.5 starter set
- or the Campaign Evolved board game!
The deadline to submit a clip is Sunday, 1st November!
